The Library of Castilla-La Mancha
The Library of Castilla-La Mancha is the most important library center in the region and one of the most outslanding in Spain.
Its origin dates back to the 18th century, when Cardinal Lorenzana opened the then Archbishop's Library to the public. In the 19th century, the State changed the ownership of its funds, enriched with those from suppressed religious communities, to constitute the basis of the Provincial Library of Toledo. Its evolution continues into the 20th century, consolidating itself as a public library open to all citizens on the Paseo del Miradero in 1966.
In 1998, due to a lack of space, it moved to this last floor of the Alcázar and was converted into the Library of Castilla-La Mancha.
The Library has more than 450,000 copies, among which stands out for its richness and uniqueness, the Borbón-Lorenzana Collection, with more than 400 incunabula, nearly 1,000 manuscripts and more than one hundred thousand books printed between the 16th and 19th centuries.
